Field of the Battle of Batih, Chetvertynivka
The destruction of Hetman Kalinowski's corps on 1–2 June 1652; Batih hill has since been almost entirely dug away by a quarry.
On 1–2 June 1652, 22–23 May by the old style, near the Southern Buh below Batih hill, Khmelnytsky's 35,000-strong Cossack army with 20,000 Tatar reinforcements surrounded and destroyed the corps of Crown Hetman Marcin Kalinowski; the hetman himself was killed. By local historians' estimates, of the 15,000-strong Polish army only 1,500 escaped, and 3,500 prisoners were killed within a few hours; the documents of the Central State Historical Archive in Kyiv (TsDIAK) give no exact number of executed prisoners. Batih hill was largely destroyed by a quarry in 1972–2003. The monument of local significance "Field of the Battle of Batih" includes the Obelisk of Cossack Glory for the 350th anniversary, Bohdan's Well, the Cossack Stone and the "Bloody Ravine"; in Chetvertynivka the "Battle of Batih" museum operates as a branch of the Vinnytsia Regional Museum, with over 600 items.
