The re-created citadel of the hetman capital destroyed in 1708.

Under Hetman Ivan Mazepa, Baturyn was the capital of the Hetmanate. In 1708 the Muscovite army utterly destroyed the Baturyn fortress — the hetman capital's tragedy Ukraine remembers to this day. The citadel was rebuilt in 2009: it is a reconstruction, the probable appearance of the structures re-created from research, not a surviving original — and the catalogue says so plainly. It now belongs to the "Hetman Capital" museum complex.

Citadel and Rozumovsky palace are the two ends of one Baturyn day. On 12–13.09.2026 a UAV attack killed a man in the Baturyn community (Chernihivskyi Chas, citing the regional military administration, 13.09.2026).
