A resort city and port on the Sea of Azov with a nature-reserve spit.

Founded in 1827 as a port, Berdiansk became a spa town with mud treatment and arguably the finest sandy beaches of the Azov coast. The Berdiansk Spit is an ornithological reserve on a bird migration route. The city preserved late-19th-century buildings and an 1838 lighthouse. On 5 May 2014 the Azov battalion of Andrii Biletskyi was formed here; Ukrinform calls the Black Corps, a partisan detachment from the Kharkiv region, its forerunner. Occupied on the fourth day of the full-scale war.

• 27 February 2022 — The city was taken on the fourth day of the full-scale war, almost without fighting.
• March 2022 — Rallies against the occupation; the port became a base for russian landing ships.
• 24 March 2022 — A strike on the port destroyed a large landing ship of the occupiers and damaged two more.
