Bielovska Fortress, Berestyn

openas of 2026-09-301731Slobozhanshchyna

The earthen bastions of a fortress of the Ukrainian Line of 1731 in the centre of Berestyn.

Bielovska Fortress was founded on 11 August 1731 as the tenth fortress of the Ukrainian Line. The Line was built from 1731 to 1742 and numbered 17 fortresses and 49 redoubts over 285 versts between the Dnipro and the Siverskyi Donets. The fortress had the form of a quadrangle with sides of 100 m and four corner bastions. In 1784 the settlement beside it became the town of Kostiantynohrad, and on 19 September 2024 the Verkhovna Rada renamed Krasnohrad to Berestyn. Today the two northern bastions, the rampart and the moat partially survive; a memorial sign stands on the north-western bastion.

The ramparts in the centre of Berestyn on Poltavska Street, not far from the local history museum (55 Soborna Street); viewing is free. From Kharkiv — by train to Berestyn station. On 17.09.2026 a drone damaged the railway station — watch the alerts.
