limitedas of 2026-10-011384Northern Black Sea coast

A half-underground T-shaped sandstone basilica, the first stage of whose construction is dated to 1384–1400.

The Armenian Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God was built of local sandstone as a basilica, half underground and T-shaped in plan. The first stage of construction is dated to 1384–1400, and the rebuildings to 1590–1610, 1825–1828 and 1895–1903. The church functioned until 1940, and from 1962 it was handed over to the local history museum. A Sarmatian burial vault of the 3rd century, discovered in 1989 on the outskirts of the town, was moved to the church grounds. The interior holds several stone khachkars. Until 2013 the building served as the base of an archaeological expedition, and then the church was returned to the Armenian community.

1 Starovirmenska Street (in older sources, 1 Kutuzova Street), near Akkerman Fortress. The church belongs to the Armenian community and services are held here at times (Bessarabia INFORM, 28.07.2023), but it is mostly closed — access inside is not guaranteed. The town is regularly attacked by drones (24.09.2026) — check the security situation.
