Engelhardt Estate and Windmill, Budyshche
The manor house where Taras served as a houseboy stands in ruin; the park and the windmill are kept up.
Pavlo Engelhardt raised the single-storey brick house in 1828 as a summer residence, and a park with a cascade of ponds and ancient oaks has survived beside it. Until 2013 the house held a school; then a reconstruction of about seven million hryvnias was begun and never finished: the roof is open, the windows broken, the floor caved in, and no body responsible for its upkeep has been named to this day. Nearby stands the only one of twenty-eight windmills to survive from Shevchenko's childhood — the one the poet drew; it was restored not long ago. The oak with drawings in its hollow is called Shevchenko's oak, but that is a tradition, not a document.
The park and the windmill are what to see. Do not go into the house — it is unsafe.
