Chernelytsia Castle
A bastion castle of the Czartoryskis, 1659: the gate tower with coats of arms survives.
A two-hectare fortress with four pointed bastions and walls up to six metres high and two and a half thick, pierced with loopholes for firearms. This was the easternmost stronghold of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on the Dniester and a provision base for the Moldavian campaigns of John III Sobieski. The lower walls were laid by Jadwiga Bełżecka in 1622–1636; Michał Jerzy Czartoryski completed the castle in 1659. What stands today is the two-storey tower over the entrance gate with the Pogoń and Piława arms, fragments of the walls, the earthen bastions and the palace foundations.
A ruin with no ticket office and no keeper; entry is free. The walls have collapsed in places — take care beneath them and in the undercrofts.
