St Catherine’s Church, Chernihiv

openas of 2026-10-191699Sivershchyna

A white five-domed church of Cossack baroque above the Val, raised by the Lyzohubs in memory of the storming of Azov in 1696.

The church was consecrated in 1715; it was built at the expense of the Lyzohubs in honour of the Cossacks of the Chernihiv Regiment who stormed Azov in 1696: chernihiv.travel names Colonel Yakiv Lyzohub as the commissioner, travels.in.ua — the brothers Semen and Yakiv under the will of their father Yukhym, landmarks.in.ua — Yakiv Yukhymovych in memory of his grandfather Yakiv Kindratovych. Five compartments, each with its own dome — the classic plan of Cossack baroque, and the church has kept it without rebuilding (landmarks.in.ua). Construction began in 1699 (VUE). The last service was held in 1933; after the fires of 1941–1943 the church was restored in two stages — 1947–1958 and 1975–1980 — and in 1979–2006 it housed the Museum of Folk Decorative Art of the Chernihiv Region (VUE). In 2006 the church was returned to the Orthodox — the Kyiv Patriarchate; in 2008 a court confirmed the legality of the transfer, and that same year the first liturgy in 75 years was held here; the confrontation with the Moscow Patriarchate lasted until 2014 (chernihiv.travel). Today it is the cathedral of the Chernihiv Eparchy of the OCU (travels.in.ua, 05.05.2025). During the siege of Chernihiv in 2022 shelling damaged the facade and the windows (newch.tv, 27.06.2022).

A working OCU church, 5 Pidvalna Street, by the entrance to the Val; there is no service schedule in open sources — check on site. The tourist information centre nearby is open April–September 9:00–19:00, October–March 9:00–17:00 (chernihiv.travel). The Chernihiv region is under air alerts — follow the warnings.
