Wooden St Nicholas Church (1607), Chernivtsi
The oldest building in Chernivtsi — an oak log church of the "house type".
A frame of oak beams under shingle, with no dome and three wrought crosses — the Bukovynian "house" type, when churches were put up without any outward sign of a church. On 21 November 1992 the church burned down by roughly 70%: the fire destroyed the roof and the walls. It was rebuilt by craftsmen from the Bukovynian Carpathians to a design by the Lviv architect Bohdan Kindzelskyi, with traditional carpentry techniques; it was consecrated in December 1996. An architectural monument of national significance and a working church.
The doors are usually locked: the service is on Sunday morning, at other times the interior is shown if you call in advance.
