Saint Miklós Castle, Chynadiiovo
A feudal castle of the Perényi barons, being restored by the artist Yosyp Bartosh at his own expense.
The castle with metre-thick walls was built by the Perényi barons; it later passed to the Telegdi, Nyáry and Lónyay families and, after the Hungarian defeat, to the Counts Schönborn. In 1657 it was damaged by the Polish troops of Prince Lubomirski, in February 1682 Ilona Zrínyi and Imre Thököly met here, and in 1711 it served the rebels of Ferenc II Rákóczi. Under Austria-Hungary and in the Second World War the building was a prison, under the USSR a village council. In 2001 the artist Yosyp Bartosh took the half-ruined castle on a long lease — the first castle tenant in Ukraine — and is restoring it with his own money and the proceeds of his paintings. Today it houses a gallery, a museum and the annual medieval festival Silver Tatosh.
The castle is open to visitors, although the upper floor still awaits full restoration (trek.in.ua, 17.04.2026). Address: 53-b Voloshyn Street (Svit Karpat, 29.03.2019); check the opening hours and admission terms locally before your trip.
