Bukovyna's oldest museum (descended from the Provincial Museum of 1863) with over 115,000 items — from the Ostroh Bible of 1581 to Bukovynian icons and costumes.

Bukovyna's oldest museum traces its origins to the Bukovyna Provincial Museum, created in 1863 by researchers and lovers of the past (tamtour.com.ua). In 1877 the institution ceased operating and over 3,000 exhibits were handed to Chernivtsi University; on 14 May 1893 the reorganised collection reopened to visitors. The museum worked until the start of the First World War, resumed in 1918, became the Regional Museum in 1930, and in 1935 the merger of two institutions produced the “King Carol II Regional Museum”; since 1940 it has been a state museum of history and local lore, which moved in 1956 to its present building on Olha Kobylianska Street. The holdings number over 115,000 items (travel.chernivtsi.ua; tamtour.com.ua gives “over 100,000”, karpaty.info “almost 90,000”): over 3,000 coins, a collection of edged weapons and firearms, Bukovynian icons of the 16th–18th centuries, early-20th-century costumes, musical instruments, and among the early printed books the Ostroh Bible of Ivan Fedorov of 1581. The halls tell of Bukovyna within the Principality of Moldavia and of “the lordly city of Chernivtsi” in the Austrian era; a separate natural history department covers the region's flora and fauna. The museum has a research library and a restoration workshop, and its branches are the literary memorial museums of Olha Kobylianska (with the homestead in Dymka) and Yurii Fedkovych (with the homestead in Putyla).

Address: 28 Olha Kobylianska St, Chernivtsi (shpalta.media gives No. 27); ticket office tel. 0372 525062, reception 0372 524489 (regmus.cv.ua/page/contacts). According to shpalta.media (14.10.2025) a ticket is 70 UAH, hours 9:00–17:00, Thu–Tue; travel.chernivtsi.ua: “daily 10:00–18:00, closed Wed”.
