Tsetsyno Hill, Chernivtsi
The highest hill of Chernivtsi, where Tsetsyn, the forerunner of the city, once stood; today a TV tower stands on the summit.
Tsetsyno Hill on the western outskirts of Chernivtsi is the highest point of the city. Tsetsyn is first mentioned in a charter of 1395 (travels.in.ua also gives 1388–1394), and in 1457 the centre of the volost was moved to Chernivtsi. In June 1908 Volodymyr Milkovych excavated the remains of a tower up to 20 m in diameter here and identified it as a watchtower. The remains of the fortifications were destroyed during the construction of the television centre with a 100 m tower, which was put into service in 1962. Today only the TV tower and the natural landscape can be seen on the hill, with no markers of the fortress at all.
