Railway Station, Chernivtsi
Secession-style “new station” of 1909 with a 20-metre dome and the goddess Iris on the pediment — the gateway to Austrian-era Chernivtsi, still serving its purpose.
The first train from Lviv arrived in Chernivtsi on 1 September 1866 after a 12-hour journey, and by the early 20th century the region's network had grown from 24 to 530 km (molbuk.ua). The old station of 1865 stood somewhat further east, so on 16 September 1906 the cornerstone of the new “dvirets” was laid; zabytki.in.ua dates the opening to 30 October 1909, the regional museum to 30 November 1909. It was built at the expense of the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of Railways — for the 500th anniversary of the first mention of Chernivtsi and the visit of royalty (molbuk.ua, 2021). Authorship is given differently: molbuk.ua names Chernivtsi architect Moritz Elling, travels.in.ua and zabytki.in.ua the Viennese Otto Wagner; according to regmus.cv.ua, Wagner was the author of the design and Elling supervised construction. The 151 m long building is in the Viennese Secession style: a 20-metre dome rises over the central section, the pediment carries the messenger goddess Iris with four cherubs (zabytki.in.ua describes a garland as a sign of welcome and a staff for the road ahead), and the portal is adorned with a stained-glass window on a steel frame — the symbolic gates of the city (travels.in.ua). The central hall was decorated with gilded ornament and lavish garlands. In the First World War the station suffered considerable damage and was restored in 1920; in the Second World War, according to molbuk.ua, it was not seriously damaged (zabytki.in.ua mentions a restoration in 1945), and in 1999 it was restored. An architectural monument of local significance.
Address: 38 Vokzalna St, Chernivtsi (zabytki.in.ua gives the old name — 38 Haharina St); station enquiries +380 372 592 190, +380 372 591 505 (travels.in.ua, updated 04.03.2025). A working station: according to molbuk.ua (23.09.2026), every passenger train departs to Bukovynian melodies — reviving the tradition of seeing off trains with an orchestra, from which the tune “Sim-sorok” originates; the regional museum (15.01.2025) calls it the city's main railway station. The building is an architectural monument of local significance (zabytki.in.ua, regmus.cv.ua).
