Grave of Petro Diachenko, South Bound Brook
The commander of the Black Zaporozhians in the main cemetery of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA.
Petro Diachenko, commander of the Black Zaporozhians cavalry regiment of the UNR Army and a participant in the First Winter Campaign, died on 23 April 1965 in Philadelphia. He is buried at St Andrew’s Cemetery in South Bound Brook — the necropolis of the Ukrainian diaspora, consecrated in 1954, where hierarchs, presidents and prime ministers of the UNR in exile lie. Sources describe his 1940s differently: the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine — “commanded the Ukrainian Self-Defence Legion and the 2nd Division of the UNA”, while English Wikipedia calls the legion the 31st Schutzmannschaft Battalion; in 1945 he led the “Free Ukraine” anti-tank brigade that fought at Bautzen.
The cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk. The coordinate is the memorial church above the cemetery; find the grave on the plan at the entrance.
