Grave of Myron Diduryk, Fort Benning
A Ukrainian from the Ternopil region whom General Moore called the best company commander he had ever seen.
Myron Diduryk was born in 1938 in Muzhyliv near Pidhaitsi, left for the United States with his parents in 1950 and became an army officer in 1960. In November 1965 Captain Diduryk commanded Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, in the Ia Drang Valley — the first major battle of the Vietnam War; General Hal Moore, in the book “We Were Soldiers Once… and Young”, called him the finest battlefield company commander he had ever seen. Major Diduryk was killed on 24 April 1970 during his second tour in Vietnam. He is buried at the cemetery of the Fort Benning army post in Georgia: Section B, site 421-A.
The main cemetery (Main Post Cemetery) lies on the grounds of the active Fort Benning base: civilians need a pass after a background check — online applications at pass.aie.army.mil are approved within 24 hours, and the pass can also be obtained at the Lindsey Creek VCC (base website, 20.03.2026). The cemetery is open daily 8:00–17:00 (Army Cemeteries, as of 01.10.2026); find the grave via the Army Cemeteries Explorer online search.
