Geographical Centre of Europe, Dilove

openas of 2026-10-021887Zakarpattia

A geodetic marker of 1887 with a Latin inscription, marking one of the versions of the centre of Europe.

The marker was set up in 1887 after geodetic surveys carried out in 1885–1887 by geographers of the Military Geographical Institute of Austria-Hungary. The work was done while preparing the project for the Rakhiv — Sighetu Marmației railway. The two-metre concrete marker has the shape of a truncated four-sided pyramid and bears a Latin inscription. In Soviet times a stele 7.2 m high was erected nearby, and in 2005 an Alley of European Flags appeared. In 2010 an ecological education centre opened here, and the complex is a branch of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. The marker stands between Dilove and Kostylivka at an altitude of 480 m.

The marker stands beside the Berehove — Rakhiv highway; Dilove itself is 50 m from the border with Romania, and before hiking into the mountains you must register at the border guard post (vidviday, 06.10.2025). It is 9.5 km from Rakhiv and a 3.7 km walk from Dilove station (go-to.rest, 09.11.2023). According to travels.in.ua (updated 18.03.2025), the complex is open 08:00–17:00, closed Saturday and Sunday; no prices in dated sources.
