Dominican Cathedral, Lviv
A baroque cathedral of 1749–1764 with an elliptical dome — now the church of the Holy Eucharist of the UGCC.
The Dominicans appeared in Lviv in the 13th century; the unsafe Gothic church was dismantled in 1748, and in 1749–1764 a new one was raised at the expense of Jozef Potocki to the design of military engineer Jan de Witte — the construction was led by Marcin Urbanik and, from 1764, by Krzysztof Muradowicz. The oval nave under an elliptical dome on a light drum is one of the most striking baroque interiors of the city; the statues of the facade are by Sebastian Fesinger, the altar sculpture by Maciej Polejowski (1777), the bell tower dates from 1865. Inside are the alabaster tomb of countess Dunin-Borkowska by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1816) and a monument to the painter Artur Grottger. From 1970 the museum of the history of religion and atheism worked here; in 1997 the church was handed to the Greek Catholics, and the museum of the history of religion remained in the cells of the monastery on Muzeina square.
