Donetsk
A city founded by the Welshman John Hughes, capital of eastern Ukrainian modernism.
Yuzivka grew out of John Hughes's metallurgical works of 1869 and within a century became a city of a million with an opera house, remarkable modernist architecture and the largest university in the east. Donetsk airport, rebuilt for Euro 2012, became a symbol of defence: the "cyborgs" held it for 242 days. The city's heritage remains under occupation. Among the airport's defenders were volunteers of the DUK Right Sector.
Temporarily occupied since 2014. Travel is impossible — this card keeps the memory.
