Swallow’s Nest castle, Haspra
A small neo-Gothic castle of 1911–1912 on the cliff of Cape Ai-Todor.
The castle stands on the cliff of Cape Ai-Todor in Haspra; the present building dates from 1911–1912 (Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine). Earlier the dacha of the court physician Adalbert Tobin stood here, and the castle was commissioned by Baron Steingel, owner of the plot from 1910; sources name the architect differently — A. Sherwood (Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine) or Vsevolod Sherwood (zabytki.in.ua). The building is about 20 metres long; the earthquake of 12 September 1927 damaged the tower and part of the cliff fell into the sea, and restoration began in 1968 under the architect Irakli Tatiev (zabytki.in.ua). In 2020 the Government of Ukraine entered the castle in the State Register of Immovable Monuments (Radio Svoboda). In 2017–2020 the occupation authorities closed it for “reconstruction” with drilling into the cliff; a UNESCO report for 2017 called these works illegal (Krym.Realii).
Crimea has been occupied since 2014 — no access.
