St Nicholas Church, Hlukhiv
The church of hetman "elections" of 1693 in the Hetmanate's last capital.
St Nicholas church was built in 1686–1693 by master Matvii Yefymov — the oldest landmark of Hlukhiv, the Hetmanate's last capital. Here took place the "elections" — ceremonies of investing hetmans — and Cossack councils gathered on the square before the church. General standard-bearer Mykola Khanenko is buried inside. In November 1708 Hlukhiv became the place where Ivan Mazepa was punished in absentia: on 5 November, Old Style, his effigy was executed on the square, and on the 12th the anathema was proclaimed in the presence of Peter I and the newly elected hetman Ivan Skoropadsky. Lokalna Istoriia names the Trinity Cathedral in Hlukhiv, which no longer stands, as the site of the anathema; Ukraina Incognita says simply “in Hlukhiv”.
A border town under constant strikes: on the evening of 26.09.2026 a russian drone hit a supermarket in Hlukhiv (kourier.in.ua, 27.09.2026). Mandatory evacuation is in force in the community, and families with children are strongly urged to leave (Hlukhiv City Council, 12.06.2026). This is a card to read: do not plan a trip here.
