A medieval rotunda with 14th–15th-century frescoes — one of the oldest churches in Zakarpattia.

The rotunda at Horiany is a small building about 9 m in diameter (8 m according to H. Lohvyn) with six false apses. Its date is disputed: the Uzhhorod Tourist Information Centre gives the 10th–11th centuries, V. Sichynsky the 12th–13th, H. Lohvyn the 13th, and the researcher Volodymyr Moizhes the late 13th century. In the 14th century (according to the Uzhhorod TIC, in the 14th–15th) a Gothic nave was added on the west; in the sources the church is dedicated to St Anne, and since 1991 it has been the Greek Catholic Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God. The 14th–15th-century frescoes are linked by “Lokalna Istoriia” with the school of Giotto, and by castles.com.ua with Tyrolean masters who worked here after the fire of 1367. The paintings were found under plaster during repairs in 1879 and fully uncovered in 1912. During the restoration of 2016–2020 the roof was replaced and the dome re-covered. The brothers Ivan and Leonid Ilko, with a grant from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, digitised the frescoes for a 3D tour.

The church is not opened daily — arrange the visit in advance.
