The largest battle of the UPA, 21–25 April 1944: a breakout from encirclement by NKVD troops.

On 21–25 April 1944 in the Hurby forests, detachments of UPA-North under Petro Oliinyk ("Enei") and the UPA-South formation of Vasyl Kuk ("Lemish") were surrounded by NKVD troops and broke out of the ring. Estimates of the forces differ: 2,500 to 5,000 insurgents against 15–30,000 Soviet troops with tanks, aircraft and cavalry; about a thousand civilians were also inside the encirclement. Losses: Ukrainian estimates — 100 to 400 insurgents killed against about 900 NKVD dead; the Soviet report claimed 11 of its own losses and 2,018 insurgents killed — a figure Ukrainian historians dispute; as of 2024 the names of 283 dead have been established. In 2006 the Pantheon of Glory was founded on the battlefield and the Holy Resurrection men's monastery established on the Insurgent Graves, with a six-metre column of the Intercession.

1 Lisova Street, village of Mosty. The monastery receives visitors daily 8:00–18:00; the Pantheon and grounds are open-air. The main commemoration is on the third day of Easter.
