Ilovaisk
The town where the withdrawal through a "green corridor" ended in August 2014.
A railway town east of Donetsk, where in August 2014 the greatest tragedy of that war took place. Ukrainian units entered Ilovaisk on 10 August, by 20 August held two thirds of the town, and on 24 August regular russian troops joined the fighting and closed the encirclement. On 29 August the columns leaving through the agreed "green corridor" were shot up. How many died is counted differently: in 2019 the General Staff named 220 servicemen of the Armed Forces, the military prosecutor's office — 366 together with interior ministry fighters, and the former chief of the General Staff Viktor Muzhenko spoke of about 420 including the volunteer battalions. Since then 29 August has been the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine.
Temporarily occupied since 2014. The memory of Ilovaisk lives in the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine on 29 August.
