An Ottoman mosque of the 16th century and the ramparts of the fortress stormed in 1790, with Ukrainian Cossacks among the attackers.

The Small Mosque was built in the 16th century under Ottoman rule — one of the few examples of medieval Muslim architecture in Ukraine. On 11 (22) December 1790 the fortress was taken by storm by russian troops and Ukrainian Cossacks. After russia's defeat in the Crimean War the fortress was partly demolished under the Treaty of Paris of 1856; the earthen ramparts and a moat up to eleven metres deep survive. Since 1973 the mosque building has housed a diorama of the storming on a canvas of 20 by 8 metres, and in 1991 the memorial park-museum Fortetsia was created to protect the fortress grounds, with models of Ottoman Izmail at 1:30.

Diorama (1A Fortechna Street): Mon–Sat 9:00–17:00; Fortetsia park-museum on weekdays 10:00–17:00. Izmail and its Danube port suffer regular drone attacks — heed the alerts.
