Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral, Kamianets-Podilskyi
A cathedral with a minaret: a 16th-century church, an Ottoman tower and a golden Madonna.
The cathedral church of Peter and Paul rose in stone in the 16th century. When Podillia belonged to the Ottoman Empire in 1672–1699, the church served as a mosque — that is when the minaret of thirty-six and a half metres rose beside it. After the city's return the minaret was not demolished: in 1756 it was crowned with a gilded statue of the Madonna, and that silhouette became Kamianets's emblem.
A working church — mind the services.
