Annunciation Cathedral, Kharkiv
The city's largest neo-Byzantine cathedral, 1888–1901. Damaged by a strike in 2024.
The five-domed neo-Byzantine church with its striped brickwork was built from 1888 to a design by the Kharkiv architect Mykhailo Lovtsov and consecrated in 1901; it became the cathedral in 1946. On 23 January 2024 a russian missile strike on central Kharkiv damaged it — on that single day, by the count of the Ukrainian Heritage Monitoring Lab, 62 heritage sites were hit, 20 of them monuments of architecture.
Damaged on 23 January 2024; the church is working. Kharkiv is under regular strikes — heed the alerts.
