Intercession Cathedral, Kharkiv
The oldest surviving building in Kharkiv — Cossack baroque of 1689.
The masonry cathedral was raised at the expense of local Cossacks from 1659 and consecrated in 1689 — nothing older survives in Kharkiv. The three-part, three-domed church of Ukrainian baroque stands above a "warm" winter church on the lower tier. From 1726 a monastery worked at the cathedral, and at the monastery the Kharkiv Collegium, the city's first institution of higher learning. Closed in the 1920s, the church was returned to the community in 1992.
Kharkiv is under regular strikes. Heed the air raid alerts; service times are on the monastery's site.
