Three Holy Hierarchs (Holberg) Church, Kharkiv
Five-domed church of 1906–1915 in Zaikivka, built at the expense of merchant Holberg to a design by Lovtsov and Pokrovsky, with an Italian-made iconostasis.
The Church of the Three Holy Hierarchs stands on Kharkiv's former outskirts, Zaikivka, on a street that now bears its patron's name. Hryhorii Holberg (Holdberg in travels.in.ua), a merchant of the first guild and head of the City Merchants' Society, financed the construction; according to zabytki.in.ua, he donated ten thousand roubles, the competition was announced on 29 January 1906 and the foundation stone laid on 2 September that year. The original design was by Mykhailo Lovtsov, professor at the Technological Institute; owing to his illness the work was taken over by diocesan architect Volodymyr Pokrovsky, who substantially reworked the concept (moniacs.kh.ua, zabytki.in.ua). zabytki.in.ua dates the consecration to 29 May 1915. The church has five domes and a tented bell tower; according to travels.in.ua, the prototype was the church of the St Petersburg metochion of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra; according to moniacs.kh.ua, the supporting arches were made of reinforced concrete, innovative at the time. The murals were painted by St Petersburg artist Oleksii Sokolov (zabytki.in.ua; Sokil in moniacs.kh.ua), and the iconostasis was made in Italy to Pokrovsky's drawings. According to zabytki.in.ua, the cross-domed church, about 40 m high, holds 650 people; it was closed in 1923, services resumed in 1941 and the parish was registered in 1944 (travels.in.ua says instead: a warehouse after 1917, reopened in 1925). According to moniacs.kh.ua, until the 2000s an Old Believer community of the Bila Krynytsia hierarchy gathered in the basement.
