Dormition Cathedral, Kharkiv
A baroque cathedral of 1780 with a classicist bell tower. Damaged by shelling.
The foundation stone of the present cathedral was laid in 1771 and the church was reconsecrated in 1780. Separately, in 1821–1833, the Alexander bell tower was built beside it — the vertical by which old Kharkiv is still recognised. In 1986 an organ was installed in the cathedral, and the building was used in parallel by the eparchy and the philharmonic. On 2 March 2022 a russian shell hit the cathedral: windows and stained glass were blown out and the decoration damaged. The people sheltering inside were unhurt.
The cathedral was damaged by shelling on 02.03.2022; there are no organ concerts here, as the organ last sounded in 2016 (kharkiv-day.com, 06.05.2024). Visiting hours for the interior are not officially confirmed, so view from outside; the city has regained the neighbouring Sobornyi Square and plans to reconstruct it (Kharkivski Vidomosti, 30.07.2026). Kharkiv is regularly under strikes, including on 28.09.2026 (ArmyInform, 28.09.2026) and 30.09.2026 (Slovo i Dilo, 30.09.2026).
