Khotyn Fortress
A fortress above the Dnister, one of Eastern Europe's mightiest.
Walls up to forty metres tall stand right over the water of the Dnister. Here in 1621 and 1673 the army of the Commonwealth together with Ukrainian Cossacks stopped the Ottoman armies — under Khotyn's walls Sahaidachnyi fought his last battle. Well preserved and museum-run, it is Bukovyna's main landmark outside Chernivtsi.
About an hour's drive from Chernivtsi. Daily 9:00–18:00, ticket office at the entrance until 17:00; in the cold season an hour earlier.
