Ruins of a royal fortress of 1090–1191 above Khust.

The stone castle above Khust was begun in 1090 and built for a full century — and for seven centuries it guarded the salt road from Solotvyno. Its end came not from an army but from lightning: on 3 July 1766 a bolt struck the powder tower, and the blast wrecked the stronghold. The ruins overlook the whole Khust valley. In March 1939, in Khust beneath the castle hill, the Soim proclaimed Carpatho-Ukraine; Avhustyn Voloshyn became its president.

A 40–50 minute climb up a steep forest path; the ruin has no railings.
