openas of 2026-09-301775Pokuttia

A Baroque Roman Catholic church of 1775 in the centre of Kolomyia, since 1991 the Greek Catholic Church of St Josaphat.

The stone Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the centre of Kolomyia was built in 1775; it is attributed to the architect Bernard Meretyn, while some sources date the church to 1762 or 1726. After a fire in 1830 the church was rebuilt over a long period, with the facade decoration simplified. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Kolomyia was kept here, taken to Poland in 1939. Under Soviet rule the church was closed and turned into the “Children's World” shop. On 1 December 1991 the building was consecrated as the Greek Catholic Church of the Holy Hieromartyr Josaphat, and since then it has served as a parish church of the UGCC.
