Kopyshche, a burned village

limitedas of 2026-10-011943Polissia

In July 1943, 2887 people were burned here; in the centre is a mass grave.

On 13–14 July 1943, during a Nazi punitive operation, residents were driven out of their houses, locked in barns and set alight. According to the village museum 2887 people died, 1347 of them children under twelve; the buildings were destroyed completely. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance lists Kopyshche among the destroyed villages of the Zhytomyr region in the book "Ukraine under Nazi Occupation: Burned Villages 1941–1944". The village was rebuilt after the war: a monument stands in the centre over the mass grave, and beside it a memorial park where the trees were planted for the dead.

The village history museum is opened by arrangement; the village is in the Olevsk community by the border — check the border-zone rules in advance.
