Korets Castle, Korets

limitedas of 2026-09-301386Volyn

Ruins of the castle of the Koretsky princes with a three-tier gate tower above the Korchyk, destroyed by fire in 1832.

The settlement of Korchesk is first mentioned in the Hypatian Chronicle under 1150. In 1380 Jogaila gave Korets to Fedir Ostrozky, and in 1386 a wooden castle was built here. In 1550, under Prince Bohush Koretsky, a stone castle was erected, which Jozef Klemens Czartoryski rebuilt into a palace in 1780. A fire in 1832 destroyed the palace from within, leaving the outer walls. Today survive the three-tier gate tower, the northern and eastern walls, the cellars and a stone bridge repaired in 2005. The castle has been under state protection since 1963 but is still without an owner: in September 2026 the regional council demanded that it be handed over to the community.

Korets, Kniaziv Koretskykh Street, by the Kyiv–Chop highway; by bus or by train on the Rivne–Lutsk line. Free access, no infrastructure (funtime.com.ua). A neglected ruin with no supervision — do not climb the walls or enter the cellars.
