Nyalab Castle, Korolevo
A 13th-century royal castle on a volcanic hill above the Tysa, destroyed in 1672.
The stone castle was founded by the Hungarian kings in the second half of the 13th century on the site of a hunting lodge; sources place the first mentions in 1279, though there is also a version of a charter of 1242. It measures 52 × 47 m, the walls are over 2 m thick, the well at least 55 m deep. In 1378 the castle was granted to the Wallachian voivode Drag, and from 1405 it became the hereditary possession of the Perényi barons, who controlled the salt rafting on the Tysa. In 1661 it withstood a Turkish siege, and in 1672 it was destroyed on the orders of Leopold I after a conspiracy of magnates. On the castle hill stands a church of 1530.
