Museum of Cosmonautics, Zhytomyr
A cosmonautics museum in the city where Serhii Korolov was born in 1907.
According to the ESU, the designer of rocket and space technology Serhii Korolov was born in Zhytomyr on 30 December 1906 Old Style (12 January 1907 New Style). From the summer of 1906 his parents rented a four-room flat at 5 Dmytrivska Street, next to the First Boys' Gymnasium where his father worked, and lived here for about two years. On 1 August 1970 a memorial museum opened in the house — at first a department of the regional museum of local history, independent since 1987; it displays the family's photographs, tableware and furnishings, and the designer's drawings and suit. In 1991 the “Cosmos” exhibition opened at 2 Dmytrivska Street: the Soyuz-27 descent module, samples of lunar soil, the bodies of R-5V and R-12 rockets. The museum was granted national status by a presidential decree of 8 September 2020 (the ESU gives 2021). In 2022–2024 its collections grew by 834 items, among them a fragment of a russian missile fired at the Pivdenne Design Office.
The memorial house is at 5 Dmytrivska Street, with the “Cosmos” exhibition next door; Tue–Sun 10:00–17:15 with a break 13:00–14:00, the last Thursday of the month is a cleaning day (zhytomyr-day.com, 07.08.2026). During an alert the museum closes; the shelter is at 17 Sviatoslava Rikhtera Street (ibid.). Zhytomyr is under attack: on 05.09.2026 a jet-powered drone hit a food-processing plant, and on the night of 30.09.2026 strikes also hit the Zhytomyr community (Suspilne Zhytomyr).
