Korostyshiv Quarry, Korostyshiv
A flooded granite quarry 1.5 km from Korostyshiv: turquoise water between ten-metre cliffs, a day trip from Kyiv and Zhytomyr.
Granite began to be worked here as early as the 1850s, and active extraction started in 1890: labradorite, gabbro and grey granite were quarried (novyny.live, 13.07.2025). In the late 1990s – early 2000s work stopped, the pumps ceased draining the groundwater, and within a few years the basin filled; marshrutka.zt.ua dates the flooding to the 1990s. Sources estimate the depth differently — up to 20 m (marshrutka.zt.ua) or up to 30 m (novyny.live); there are no exact soundings in open access, and the bottom is visible to 3–5 m. The rocky banks rise up to 10 m (travels.in.ua, 24.03.2025). Swimming is not officially permitted: there are no lifeguards and no equipped beaches (novyny.live). Entry and parking are free; there are no official recreation centres.
An open-air site, admission free (marshrutka.zt.ua, 21.06.2025). From Zhytomyr — by minibus No. 104 from the bus station to Korostyshiv and 1 km on foot, by car — 25 km along the E40 highway; from Kyiv — 100–105 km. Swimming is not permitted, and the cliff edges are unfenced — take care with children.
