Huk Waterfall, Kosiv
A series of waterfalls and rapids on the Rybnytsia river on the south-western outskirts of Kosiv; a geological nature monument of local significance.
The Kosiv Huk (in the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, “Huky Kosivski”) is a series of waterfalls and large rapids on the Rybnytsia river within Kosiv, on the south-western outskirts of the town between Mounts Ostryi and Stizhky. The First Huk was formed by the erosion of soft layers — shales and sandstones; there are geological exposures by the waterfalls, and on the right bank the cliffs reach 15 m. Since 1996 it has been a geological nature monument of local significance. According to the ESU, in the 1950s the water on the First Huk fell from a height of 2–3 m, while by the time the article was written (2006) a large rapid and a series of smaller ones upstream remained; tourist portals give the total height of the cascades as about 2.5 m. During the floods of 2008 and the 2010s the river piled up ridges of stones that badly damaged the waterfall: because of the change in the riverbed it has become lower, but it can still be viewed (mapakosiv.if.ua, 2026). According to the iftourism.com portal, in the 1930s a pavilion with a buffet and a dance hall with an orchestra were built above the Huk, and further downstream there was a kayak station. In 2019 a viewing platform overlooking the Rybnytsia was opened on Franka Street.
Address: Nad Hukom Street, Kosiv (iftourism.com, huculia.info). Getting there: from Druzhby Street, along which traffic passes through Kosiv, turn right at the fork onto Franka Street and drive or walk about 100 m (karpaty.rocks, updated 23.07.2026). The viewing platform is on Franka Street (mapakosiv.if.ua, 23.06.2026). The sources give no visiting hours or fees. Nearby are “Karpatski Zori” (≈210 m to the north-west according to OSM/mapcarta; huculia.info, 2014, calls it a sanatorium), the “Baika” holiday centre and private guesthouses (huculia.info, 2014 — the information may be out of date).
