Memorial to the Heroes of Kruty, Pamiatne
The battle of 29 January 1918, in which students and cadets stood against Muravyov's Bolshevik force.
On 29 January 1918 near Kruty station, 300 to 600 Ukrainian fighters — cadets, students, gymnasium pupils — took battle against Muravyov's Bolshevik troops numbering four to seven thousand. About 30 youths were taken prisoner, tortured and executed; the executed were buried near Askold's Grave in Kyiv, the names of only 19 defenders are known, and Bolshevik combat losses came to up to 300 killed. In 1991 a birch cross was raised on the battlefield — the first public commemoration; in 2006 a memorial complex opened with a ten-metre red column, a chapel, a cross-shaped lake and seven vintage railway carriages holding exhibitions. Since 2010 the memorial has been a branch of the National Military History Museum of Ukraine.
