Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, Kryvorivnia
A Hutsul wooden church of 1719 that has never once been closed in three centuries.
The cruciform five-log-frame church with a tented top on a low octagon is one of the best-known works of Hutsul folk architecture. The official date is 1719, when the church was moved to the left bank of the Cheremosh; according to the eparchy, the first church had stood in the hamlet of Zarichchia since the 1660s. The first interior paintings date from the 1730s, the iconostasis from the early 1800s; next to the church survives a bell tower and watchtower of 1818. Yakiv Holovatsky, Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky and Lesia Ukrainka prayed in this church; in 1901 Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky came on a visit. In 1972 the roof was covered with sheet metal, and in 2011 it was shingled again.
A working parish of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine; keep quiet during services. A monument of national significance.
