Karadag Nature Reserve, Kurortne
A Jurassic volcanic massif and a reserve of 1979 with a biological station working since 1914.
The Karadag reserve was created in 1979 on the Jurassic volcanic massif of Karadag in south-eastern Crimea (Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine). It covers 2,874.2 hectares, including 809.1 hectares of Black Sea waters; the highest point of the massif reaches 577 metres (Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine; Wikipedia). 2,978 species of flora have been recorded here, including 1,175 species of vascular plants, and more than 5,500 species of fauna (Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine). The marine and coastal section has been a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since 2004 (Wikipedia). The biological station at the foot of the western slope, in Kurortne, has worked since 1914; it was founded by Terentii Viazemskyi (Krym.Realii). In August 2016 the occupation authorities transferred the reserve to the federal property of russia (Krym.Realii).
Crimea has been occupied since 2014 — no access. The point is a nominal centre of the reserve.
