St Cyril’s Church, Kyiv

openas of 2026-10-091146Naddniprianshchyna

A 12th-century church and burial place of the Olhovych princes, with 18th-century baroque domes and murals by Mykhailo Vrubel.

Grand Prince Vsevolod Olhovych founded the monastery on the outskirts of medieval Kyiv around 1140, and St Cyril’s Church was built around 1146; in the 12th–13th centuries it was the burial place of the Chernihiv Olhovych princes (Encyclopedia of Ukraine). After a fire in 1734 the church was rebuilt in 1750–1760 with the involvement of Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi, gaining a baroque pediment and domes (en.wikipedia; Encyclopedia of Ukraine). In 1881–1884 the old frescoes were uncovered under Adrian Prakhov’s supervision, and Mykhailo Vrubel painted new murals and four icons for the iconostasis (Encyclopedia of Ukraine). The church has been a museum since 1929 and a branch of the Sophia of Kyiv reserve since 1965 (en.wikipedia). From 1994 until the end of January 2025 the Moscow Patriarchate held services here; now the Orthodox Church of Ukraine serves, and the church has become the seat of the Luhansk eparchy until the region is liberated (Ukrainska Pravda. Zhyttia).

12 Oleny Telihy St (guide.kyivcity.gov.ua). A branch of the Sophia of Kyiv reserve.
