Letychiv Castle, Letychiv

openas of 2026-10-031300Podillia

Remains of a late 16th-century stone castle — a round tower and parts of the walls; the former Dominican monastery houses the Roman Catholic Sanctuary of Our Lady of Letychiv.

In the second half of the 14th century a wooden castle was built in Letychiv, and in the last quarter of the 16th century it was rebuilt in stone; the rebuilding is associated with Jan Potocki, the starosta of Kamianets, who acted at the king's demand. Sources give the exact year differently — 1579 or 1598. The fortification had a rectangular courtyard surrounded by high walls with loopholes, four round corner towers and a rectangular gate tower. In 1606 the Dominican monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded here; the Dominicans brought an icon of Our Lady of the Snows, which was moved to the new church in 1638 and crowned on 4 October 1778. In 1933 the church was closed and turned into a stable, and during the German occupation a concentration camp operated in the castle. In 1989 the church was returned to the Roman Catholic community; today it is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Letychiv of the Diocese of Kamianets-Podilskyi and a place of pilgrimage. Of the castle, a round tower and parts of the walls survive.
