Museum of the Volhynian Icon, Lutsk
Ukraine's only museum of Volhynian icon painting, home to the Kholm Icon of the Mother of God of the 11th–12th centuries.
The museum opened in August 1993 as a department of the Volyn Museum of Local History; it is the only museum of the Volhynian school of icon painting in Ukraine. The collection numbers more than 1.5 thousand works of sacred art, including more than 600 icons of the 16th–19th centuries. The chief treasure is the Kholm Icon of the Mother of God, a Byzantine work of the late 11th — early 12th century, first documented in 1223. In 2000 Nadiia Horlytska gave the museum the icon, which the family of the priest Havryil Korobchuk had kept in secret for more than 50 years; the restoration was carried out by Anatolii Kvasiuk. The icon has a chapel hall of its own.
