Orłowski Palace and Waterfall, Maliivtsi
Jan Orłowski's palace of 1788 with atlantes on the facade, now a museum of history and culture, and a landscape park with the 18-metre St Onuphrius rock, a two-tier grotto and an artificial waterfall.
The Maliivtsi estate was bought in 1785 by Jan Orłowski, Master of the Hunt of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and a member of the inner circle of the last Polish king, Stanisław August (esu.com.ua, dovkola.media). According to esu.com.ua, the palace was built in the second half of the 1780s in the classicist spirit under the direction of Italian architect Domenico Merlini and his pupil Jakub Kubicki; the date “1788” is carved on the left portico. The building is of blocks of local sandstone; the second-floor balcony is held up by atlantes (dovkola.media). Orłowski laid out a landscape park with elements of formal planning in front of the palace (esu.com.ua); according to travels.in.ua and dovkola.media, it was designed by the Irishman Dionizy Mikler. The park's showpiece is an 18-metre limestone rock with a two-tier grotto and an artificial waterfall: the upper cave is dedicated to John the Baptist, the lower to St Onuphrius, and in 1708 a Basilian monastery was re-established here (esu.com.ua). In the 20th century the palace housed a children's tuberculosis sanatorium (esu.com.ua); on 30 September 2021 the Maliivtsi Museum of History and Culture was created here (travels.in.ua), which turned five in 2026 (history.kpnu.edu.ua). The museum shows the interiors and a collection of tableware, and runs tours of the cellars and of the park to the waterfall; in May the old count's lilac blooms, which, according to the museum's director, was once brought from abroad for the park (podillyanews.com, 18.05.2026).
