Church of St Nicholas Naberezhnyi, Kyiv
Late Ukrainian baroque by Hryhorovych-Barskyi in Podil; in the churchyard, the grave of Georgiy Gongadze.
The church in Podil was built in 1772–1775 to the design of Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi — late Ukrainian baroque: brick, with a single dome and an arcade of paired Corinthian columns. A wooden church on this site is recorded from 1543; after the fire of 1677 it was rebuilt, and in the 1750s repaired at the Cossacks' expense. In 1861–1863 a tented belfry with a heated church was added on the west side to a design by Mykhailo Ikonnikov. Services continued until 1960 and resumed in 1992; the restoration of 1985–1990 was led by architects Iryna Malakova and Halyna Tserkovniak. On 22 March 2016 journalist Georgiy Gongadze, founder of Ukrainska Pravda, murdered in 2000, was buried in the churchyard — his body had waited more than fifteen years for burial.
