The oldest naval observatory of South-Eastern Europe, 1821 — on the UNESCO tentative list.

The observatory was founded in 1821 on the initiative of Admiral Oleksii Greig for the navigational needs of the fleet; the main classicist building was erected in 1821–1829 to a design by Fedir Wunsch. Its first director was Karl Knorre, not yet twenty: he led the observatory for more than half a century and compiled the fifth sheet of the Berlin Academy's star chart. On 12 March 2007 the site was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list. The observatory stands on Spaskyi Hill, the highest point of the city, where remains of a Scythian sanctuary were found; in 2024 it was attached to the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy, and on 11 August 2025 the Blue Shield emblem was mounted on the building.

1 Observatorna Street. Mon–Fri 8:30–17:00; daytime tours by prior arrangement by phone, evening observations (300 UAH, children 270) by booking via the observatory's Telegram. Mykolaiv is regularly attacked by drones — mind the alerts.
