St Nicholas Cathedral, Nizhyn
The first cruciform five-domed church of Ukrainian baroque — paid for by the Zolotarenko colonels.
The cathedral was built at the expense of the Cossacks of the Nizhyn regiment — colonels Ivan and Vasyl Zolotarenko; construction began after 1648, and by the end of 1658 the main body of the church most likely already stood. It is the first example of a cruciform five-domed building of Ukrainian baroque with its characteristic "all-facade" quality: the church looks the same from every side, with pear-shaped domes and quatrefoil windows. On 18 June 1663, during the Black Council, Ivan Briukhovetsky swore the hetman's oath here. The six-tier iconostasis of 1734 was destroyed in the 1920s. Dominique De la Flise — the French physician who left albums of drawings of the Kyiv region's villages — died in Nizhyn in 1861; he had moved here to be near his son, and his burial place is unknown.
