Nativity of the Virgin Church, Nyzhnii Verbizh
A five-domed Hutsul church built by one of Dovbush's outlaws — UNESCO heritage.
The five-domed cruciform wooden church was built in 1756–1808 at the expense of the local miller Hryhorii Semeniuk; by tradition he had been an opryshok in Oleksa Dovbush's band. The towers with their domes rise eleven and a half metres, and inside survives a three-tier gilded baroque iconostasis. On 21 June 2013 the church entered the UNESCO World Heritage List among sixteen wooden churches of the Carpathian region of Poland and Ukraine as an example of the Hutsul type; in 2018 it was added to the State Register of monuments of national significance. In 1990 the shingles were replaced with galvanised sheet metal, which disfigures the church and harms the timber — the project to bring back the shingles has still not been carried out.
A working church of an OCU community (Firtka, 10.09.2023): inside during services or by arrangement with the parish. Since 1990 the church has been clad in metal sheeting, under which the wood is decaying, and one of the domes has tilted; there had been no restoration at that time (Ukraina Incognita, 31.01.2021).
