Odesa's centre — on the UNESCO list since 2023, inscribed in wartime.

The city was laid out at the end of the 18th century by Dutch engineer Franz de Volan and built up under the Duc de Richelieu, whose monument stands above the Potemkin Stairs. The centre entered the World Heritage list in 2023 by expedited procedure — and went straight onto the heritage-in-danger list: shelling has damaged, among others, the Transfiguration Cathedral.

A frontline city: air alarms here are no formality, shelter is close.
